Early Life and Education

Erasmus Philipps was the oldest son of Sir John Philipps, 4th Baronet. His mother was Mary Smith. Her father, Anthony Smith, was a merchant who worked with the East India Company.

Sir Erasmus went to Pembroke College, Oxford, a famous university, in 1720. He also studied law at Lincoln's Inn starting in 1721. This training helped him prepare for a life in public service.

Political Career in Parliament

Sir Erasmus Philipps became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Haverfordwest. He was first elected in 1726 without anyone running against him. He was re-elected in 1727 and again in 1734.

As an MP, Sir Erasmus often disagreed with the government in power. He voted against the "Administration" (the ruling government) in almost every important decision. This showed he had strong beliefs and wasn't afraid to stand up for them.

In 1732, he also became a trustee for the Georgia Society. This group helped set up the colony of Georgia in America. In 1739, he was away in Italy for his health and missed a big vote about Spain. He was elected again in 1741 and continued to vote against the government on key issues.

Other Achievements

In 1727, Sir Erasmus Philipps was chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very old and respected group for scientists and thinkers. Being a Fellow meant he was recognized for his knowledge and contributions.

In 1737, he became the 5th Baronet after his father passed away. This meant he inherited his father's title and responsibilities.

Later Life and Death

Sadly, Sir Erasmus Philipps died in 1743. He was on his way home from Bath when his horse got scared by some pigs. He fell into the River Avon and drowned.

Sir Erasmus was not married and had no children. After his death, his younger brother, Sir John Philipps, 6th Baronet, took over the family title.
