Sir George Savile, 1st Baronet of Thornhill (born 1551 – died 12 November 1622) was an important English politician. He was a very early ancestor of the famous Marquess of Halifax.

Who Was Sir George Savile?
Sir George Savile was born in 1551. He was the oldest son of Henry Savile and Joan Vernon. His family, the Saviles, were a well-known and old family from Yorkshire, England. Many people from his family had important jobs. They often served as Members of Parliament (MPs) or as sheriffs.
Sir George's Political Career
Sir George Savile followed in his family's footsteps. He became a Member of Parliament (MP) himself. In 1586, he was elected to represent Boroughbridge. Later, in 1593, he became an MP for Yorkshire.
In 1603, he inherited a large estate called Thornhill. This happened after his cousin, Edward Savile, passed away. King James I of England gave him a special title in 1611. He was made a Baronet, which is a title of honor. From 1613 to 1614, he also served as the High Sheriff of Yorkshire. This was a very important job in the county.
His Family and Marriages
Sir George Savile was married two times. He had children with both of his wives.
His first wife was Mary Talbot. She was the daughter of a powerful nobleman, the Earl of Shrewsbury. When they married, Mary brought a large estate called Rufford Abbey into the Savile family.
Mary and Sir George had a son, also named George Savile. This son passed away before his father. However, his sons, George and William, later became the 2nd and 3rd Baronets in the family. Sir William, the 3rd Baronet, was the father of George Savile, 1st Marquess of Halifax.
Sir George's second wife was Elizabeth Ayscough. She was a widow when they married. Together, they had three more sons: John, Richard, and Henry. They also had four daughters.
Death and Legacy
Sir George Savile passed away in 1622. He was buried in a church in Thornhill, Yorkshire. His life showed how important his family was in English politics and society.
