Sir Henry Carew, 7th Baronet (1779–1830) lived at Haccombe in Devon, England. He was part of an important family in Devon who owned a lot of land. A Baronet is a special title, like a knight, that is passed down through the family.

Sir Henry Carew's Family Background

Sir Henry Carew was the oldest son of Sir Thomas Carew, 6th Baronet (who lived from about 1755 to 1805). His mother was Jane Smallwood. Her father was Reverend James Smallwood.

In 1806, Sir Henry Carew married Elizabeth Palk (1786-1862). She was the only daughter who lived to adulthood and inherited everything from her father, Walter Palk (1742-1819). Walter Palk lived at Marley House in Devon. He was an important person who served as a Member of Parliament, which means he helped make laws for the country. He was also the Sheriff of Devon and a Captain in the local volunteer army.

Sir Henry and Elizabeth had several children:

  • Sir Walter Palk Carew, 8th Baronet (1807–1874) was their oldest son. He became the 8th Baronet after his father. His own son, Captain Walter Palk Carew (1838-1873), passed away before him and did not have children.
  • Henry Carew (1808-1871) was their second son. He was the father of Sir Henry Palk Carew, 9th Baronet (1870–1934).
  • Thomas Carew (1810-1876) was their third son. He married Charlotte Curtis, whose father was Sir William Curtis, 2nd Baronet.
  • Reverend Robert Palk Carew (1818-1875) was their fourth son. He was a vicar, which is a type of priest, in a town called Rattery.

Sir Henry Carew's Death and Memorial

An engraved stone on Sir Henry Carew's tomb in Haccombe Church.

Sir Henry Carew passed away on October 31, 1830. He was buried in his family's special burial place under St Blaise's Church in Haccombe. This church was unique because it was a "Royal Peculiar," meaning it was directly under the control of the Archbishop of Canterbury, not the local Bishop of Exeter.

His memorial can still be seen in the church. It is a stone tomb inside a special carved area, beneath a beautiful stained glass window. The top of the tomb has an inscription written in Latin, in an old-fashioned style, like monuments from long ago.

The inscription says: "Here lies buried in the crypt Henry Carew, Baronet, who died on the 31st day of October in the year of our Lord 1830, at 51 years old. Here also with her husband lies Lady Elizabeth Carew, daughter and heiress of Walter Palk of Marley, Esquire, who died on the 7th day of March in the year of our Lord 1862, at 76 years old."

Above the tomb, there is a window with three sections. The middle section shows the coats of arms of Sir Henry's ancestors who owned Haccombe before him. These include the de Haccombe, Archdeckne, Courtenay, and Carew families.
