A Life in Politics
Sir Howard Elphinstone became a Member of Parliament (MP) for the town of Hastings in 1835. An MP is someone elected by the public to represent them in the House of Commons, which is part of the UK Parliament. Before this, he had tried to win the Hastings seat in 1832 but was not successful.
His Time in Parliament
After his first term, Sir Howard did not run for re-election in Hastings in 1837. Instead, he tried to win a seat in Liverpool, but he did not succeed there either. He returned to the House of Commons in 1841. This time, he won one of the two available seats for the area of Lewes. He chose not to run for Parliament again in 1847.
Other Important Roles
Beyond his political career, Sir Howard Elphinstone was also recognized for his knowledge. In June 1832, he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very old and respected group in the UK that promotes science. Being a Fellow means he was considered a leading expert in his field.
Family Life
Sir Howard Elphinstone was the son of Lieutenant-General Sir Howard Elphinstone, who was the 1st Baronet. His mother was Frances Warburton. He studied law and became a barrister, which is a type of lawyer. He also earned advanced degrees, including a Master of Arts (MA) and a Doctor of Civil Law (D.C.L.).
His Marriage and Children
In 1829, Sir Howard married Elizabeth Julia Curteis. They had two children together. When his father passed away in 1846, Sir Howard inherited the title of Baronet. This meant he became the 2nd Baronet in his family line. After his own death in 1893, his son, Howard Warburton Elphinstone, became the 3rd Baronet.
