Sir Humphrey Briggs, 4th Baronet (born around 1670 – died 8 December 1734) was an important English politician. He came from a place called Haughton in Shropshire. Sir Humphrey was a member of the Whig political party. He served in the English and British Parliament from 1701 to 1727.

Early Life and Family

Sir Humphrey Briggs was the oldest son of Sir Humphrey Briggs, 3rd Baronet. His family lived in Haughton and Ernstrey Park in Shropshire. His mother was Barbara Wyndham.

When he was 17, in 1687, he went to Wadham College, Oxford University. He also joined Lincoln's Inn, which was a place where people studied to become lawyers. When his father passed away on 31 January 1699, Humphrey became the 4th Baronet. A Baronet is a special title, like a knight, that is passed down in a family.

Political Career

Sir Humphrey Briggs was a Member of Parliament (MP). This means he was elected by people to represent them in the government. He was part of the Whig party.

Representing Shropshire

In February 1701, Sir Humphrey was first elected as an MP for Shropshire. But in the next election in November 1701, he did not win.

Representing Bridgnorth

In July 1702, he was elected without anyone opposing him for Bridgnorth. He won again in 1705 after a close election. In the 1708 election, he was again elected for Bridgnorth without any opposition.

Sir Humphrey supported the Whig government. He voted for a law in 1709 that allowed people from a place called Palatine to become British citizens. He also voted in 1710 to remove a person named Dr. Sacheverell from his position. The 1710 British general election was very focused on this issue. Sir Humphrey and another Whig MP for Bridgnorth lost their seats to two Tory party members in a tough election.

Representing Much Wenlock

Sir Humphrey did not run in the 1715 election. However, he was elected again in a special election for Much Wenlock on 13 July 1716. He won easily for Wenlock in the 1722 election. He decided not to run for election in 1727.

Later Life

Sir Humphrey Briggs never got married. He passed away on 8 December 1734. After his death, his brother, Hugh, became the next Baronet.
