Sir James Howe, 2nd Baronet (born around 1669 – died January 19, 1736) was an important English politician. He lived in a place called Berwick St Leonard, near Hindon, in Wiltshire. Sir James was a member of the Tory political party and served in the English and British parliaments, known as the House of Commons, from 1698 to 1709.
Early Life and Family
Sir James Howe was the son of Sir George Grobham Howe, 1st Baronet. His mother was Elizabeth Grimston. His father had also been a Member of Parliament (MP) for Hindon. When his father passed away in 1676, James became the 2nd Baronet.
He got married twice. His first wife was Elizabeth Nutt, whom he married in 1689. Sadly, she died in 1691. He then married his second wife, Elizabeth Stratford, in August 1694.
His Time in Parliament
Sir James Howe was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Hindon in 1698. He was part of the Tory party.
- He was re-elected in 1701.
- He chose not to run in the second election of that same year.
- He was elected again in 1702 and kept his seat until 1705, when he was not re-elected.
- In 1708, he was elected once more as the MP for Hindon.
- However, he lost his seat in February 1709 after a special review, called a petition.
Later Life
Sir James Howe passed away on January 19, 1736, when he was about 66 years old. He did not have any children. His lands and property were inherited by his nephew, Henry Lee Warner. Interestingly, Henry Lee Warner had also served as an MP for Hindon from 1711 to 1713.
