Sir James Long, 5th Baronet (born 1682, died 1729) was an important English landowner and politician. He was a member of the English House of Commons and later the British House of Commons for many years.

Early Life and Family

James Long was born in 1682 at Athelhampton, a large estate. His parents were James Long and Susan Strangways. He was the grandson of Sir James Long, 2nd Baronet. James also had a sister named Anne Long.

When his brother, Sir Giles Long, 4th Baronet, passed away in 1698, James became the 5th Baronet. A baronet is a special title that is passed down through families.

In 1702, James Long married Henrietta Greville in London. Her father was Fulke Greville, 5th Baron Brooke.

Inheriting Estates

In 1710, James Long inherited several large estates. These included the Draycot Cerne estate and Athelhampton Manor. He also received other lands in Wiltshire and Dorset, and an estate near Ripon in Yorkshire. He used some of this money to buy even more land in Dorset, close to Athelhampton.

Political Career

Sir James Long was a politician for many years. He was a member of the English House of Commons and later the British House of Commons. This meant he helped make laws for the country.

Member of Parliament

He was first elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Chippenham in 1705. He was re-elected for Chippenham in 1708 and 1710.

Later, in 1715, he became the MP for Wootton Bassett. He did not run for election in 1722. However, he was elected again in 1727, this time representing the whole county of Wiltshire.

Later Life and Death

Sir James Long passed away on March 16, 1729, at his home in London. He had four daughters and two sons with his wife, Henrietta. Four of his six children were still alive when he died. His son, Robert, took over the baronetcy after him.

One of his daughters, Susanna, married her mother's gardener in 1732. Lady Henrietta Long, his wife, died later in 1765 in Bath.
