Sir James Oxenden, 2nd Baronet (born April 4, 1641 – died September 29, 1708) was an important English politician from Dene, Kent. He served in the House of Commons, which is a part of the English Parliament, for many years between 1679 and 1702.

Who Was Sir James Oxenden?

Sir James Oxenden was the son of Sir Henry Oxenden, 1st Baronet. His mother was Elizabeth Meredith, who was the daughter of Sir William Meredith from Leeds Abbey, Kent.

He received the title of Knight on March 22, 1671. A Knight is a special title given by the King or Queen for service.

His Time in Politics

Sir James Oxenden was a Member of Parliament (MP) for the area of Sandwich. An MP is someone chosen by people to represent them in Parliament and help make laws. He served for Sandwich from 1679 to 1685 and again from 1689 to 1690.

In August 1686, he became the second Baronet in his family, taking over from his father. A Baronet is a special title that is passed down through families, similar to a knight but hereditary.

Later, Sir James also served as an MP for Kent from 1698 to 1701. He then returned to represent Sandwich again from 1701 to 1702.

Family Life and Legacy

Sir James Oxenden married twice. His first wife was Elizabeth Chute. His second wife was Arabella Watson, who was the sister of Lewis, the Earl of Rockingham.

Sir James did not have any children. Because of this, when he passed away at the age of sixty-seven, the Baronet title was passed on to his brother.
