Sir John Banks (born 1627 – died 1699) was a very successful English merchant and politician. He started from humble beginnings but became one of London's richest people. He owned many properties and was also a Member of Parliament.

Sir John Banks's Life

Sir John Banks was born in 1627. His father was Caleb Bankes from Maidstone, Kent. John went to Emmanuel College, Cambridge for his education.

Family and Honors

Around 1657, John Banks married Elizabeth Dethick. They had several children, including Caleb, Mary, and Elizabeth. Their son, Caleb, also became a Member of Parliament. However, Caleb passed away before his father.

In 1661, King Charles II gave John Banks the title of a baronet. This was a special honor, making him 'Sir John Banks, 1st Baronet'. He also became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1668. This group is for important scientists and thinkers.

Business and Politics

Sir John was very involved in trade with countries far away, especially in the East and Africa. In 1677, he helped fund a trip to find a new trade route in the North-east. He was also the Governor of the East India Company from 1673 to 1674. This company was very powerful in trading goods from Asia.

Banks was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) many times. He represented different areas like Maidstone, Winchelsea, Rochester, and Queenborough. As an MP, he helped make laws for the country.

In 1672, he spoke up for the rights of Nonconformist groups. These were Protestants who did not follow the official Church of England. He believed they should be allowed to meet freely.

Later Years

Sir John Banks passed away in 1699. Since his son Caleb had died before him without children, the baronet title ended. His two married daughters, Mary and Elizabeth, inherited his large estate.
