Sir John Bland, 5th Baronet facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir John Bland, 5th Baronet (1691–1743), was an important British landowner and politician. He came from Kippax Park in Yorkshire and Hulme Hall in Lancashire. Sir John served in the House of Commons, which is like the main law-making body in Britain, from 1713 to 1727.

Early Life and Family

Sir John Bland was born in 1691 and was the only son of Sir John Bland, 4th Baronet. His mother was Anne Mosley. He was baptized on September 10, 1691.

He went to Christ Church, Oxford, a famous university, in 1707. When his father passed away on October 25, 1715, John became the 5th Baronet. A Baronet is a special title, like a knight, that is passed down through families.

In 1716, Sir John married Frances Finch. She was the daughter of Heneage Finch, 1st Earl of Aylesford.

Political Career

Sir John Bland started his political journey early. In 1712, he was in Utrecht, a city in the Netherlands. At the same time, his father was helping him prepare for the 1713 general election in Britain.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

In 1713, Sir John was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Lancashire. An MP is a person chosen by voters to represent them in the House of Commons. He was elected again without anyone opposing him in the 1715 election.

Sir John was part of the Tory political group. At that time, some people called "Jacobites" wanted a different king to rule Britain. Because Sir John was thought to support the Jacobites, he was arrested in November 1715. He was also removed from his position as a local judge in Lancashire.

Despite these challenges, Sir John kept his seat in Parliament. He was re-elected unopposed in the 1722 general election.

Retirement from Politics

Sir John Bland decided to retire from Parliament in 1727 when he was 35 years old. After leaving national politics, he focused more on local activities in Lancashire. His mother had inherited Hulme Hall and other large estates in Lancashire, which covered much of the city of Manchester.

Later Life and Legacy

Sir John Bland passed away in Bath on April 9, 1743. He and his wife had two sons and four daughters who survived him. His sons, John and Hungerford, later became Baronets after him.

His son, Sir John, 6th Baronet (1722–1755), also became an MP for Ludgershall.
