Sir John Coryton, 4th Baronet (born around 1690, died 1739) was an important person in British politics. He owned land and served as a politician in the House of Commons from 1713 to 1734. The House of Commons is a big part of the British government, where laws are made.
Early Life and Family
John Coryton was born in Greenwich, England. He was the only son of Sir William Coryton, 3rd Baronet and his mother, Susanna Littleton. His mother's father, Edward Littleton, was also a Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is a person elected to represent an area in the government.
John went to Rugby School starting in 1698. Later, when he was 18, he began studying at Christ Church, Oxford in 1708.
When his father passed away in 1711, John became the next Baronet. A Baronet is a special title, like a knight, that is passed down in families. In 1715, John Coryton married Rachel Helyar.
Political Career
Sir John Coryton became a Member of Parliament for a place called Callington. He was part of the Tory political group. He was first elected in 1713 and then again in 1715.
He did not run for election in 1722. However, he was elected again as the MP for Callington in 1727. He chose not to run in the 1734 election. This was because of a political agreement with Robert Walpole, a powerful leader at the time.
Later Life and Legacy
Sir John Coryton passed away on May 22, 1739. He did not have any children. Because of this, the special title of Baronet ended with him.
