A Young Scholar's Life

John Cullum was born on June 21, 1733, in a place called Hawstead. He was the oldest son of Sir John Cullum, 5th Baronet. His mother was Susanna Gery.

Early Education and College

Young John went to school at King Edward VI's School, Bury St. Edmunds. After that, he studied at Catharine Hall, Cambridge University. In 1756, he did very well in math, ranking fourth in a special exam.

However, he was even better at classic subjects like Latin and Greek. In 1758, he won an award for the best essay written in Latin. He became a Fellow at his college, which meant he was a senior member and teacher.

Becoming a Church Leader

In 1762, John's father helped him become the rector of Hawstead. This meant he was the main priest for that area. Later, in 1774, he also became the vicar of Great Thurlow.

That same year, he took over from his father as the sixth Baronet. A Baronet is a special title, like a knight, that can be passed down in a family.

A Passion for Knowledge

Sir John Cullum was a very curious person. He loved to learn about history, old objects, and nature. He was known as a scholar, an antiquary (someone who studies old things), and a natural scientist.

Because of his knowledge, he was chosen for two important groups. In 1774, he became a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London. The next year, in 1775, he joined the Fellow of the Royal Society. These were groups for top experts in history and science.

Sir John Cullum passed away on October 9, 1785, from a lung illness called consumption (now known as tuberculosis). He was buried in Hawstead.

Sir John's Writings and Friends

Sir John Cullum kept many diaries and letters. These writings tell us a lot about his life and the people he knew. He had many famous friends who also loved history and learning.

His Important Book

His most famous work was a book called The History and Antiquities of Hawsted and Hardwick. This book was published in 1784. It was a detailed history of his home area, Hawstead and Hardwick.

He also planned to write a bigger History of Suffolk and a new book about English plants called Flora Anglicana. Sadly, he did not get to finish these projects.

Family Life

Sir John Cullum married Peggy Bisson on July 11, 1765. She was the only daughter of Daniel Bisson. Peggy passed away in 1810.
