Sir John Dineley, 2nd Baronet (born around 1680 – died 1741) was an important person from a noble family in England. He lived at Burhope House in Wellington, Herefordshire. He is known for a sad event that happened to him.

Who Was Sir John Dineley?

Sir John Dineley was born as John Goodere around the year 1680. He was the second son of Sir Edward Goodere, 1st Baronet. His mother, Helen Dineley, came from a well-known family, being the granddaughter of Lewis Watson, 1st Baron Rockingham.

Early Life and Name Change

John started his career at sea, working in the merchant navy. This was a common path for young men at the time. In 1708, he volunteered on a ship called HMS Diamond. Around this time, he inherited land and property in Charlton, Worcestershire from his mother's family. Because of this inheritance, he decided to change his last name from Goodere to Dineley. This was a way to honor his maternal ancestors.

Sir John's Family Life

Before 1720, Sir John married a woman named Mary Lawford. However, their marriage did not last. They later divorced.

A Tragic Event

Sir John Dineley had a difficult relationship with his younger brother, Samuel Goodere. Their disagreements had been going on for a long time. On January 17, 1741, a very sad event occurred. Sir John was on his brother's ship, HMS Ruby, which was near Bristol. Sadly, he died on the ship.

What Happened Next?

After Sir John's death, his divorced wife tried to claim that she was still his widow and that they had a son who should inherit his title. However, this claim was found to be untrue and did not succeed.

The authorities investigated Sir John's death. His brother, Samuel, and two other people involved were found responsible. They were punished on April 15, 1741. After Sir John's death, the title of Baronet went to Samuel's oldest son, Edward. Edward also inherited the Dineley family's estate.
