Sir John Ennis (born in 1800, died in 1878) was an important Irish politician. He was a member of the British Parliament from 1857 to 1865. He also served as the Governor of the Bank of Ireland.

Sir John Ennis was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1800. He was the only son of Andrew Ennis and Mary McManus. He went to a special school called Stonyhurst Roman Catholic College.

A Career in Politics

In 1857, John Ennis became a Member of Parliament (MP) for a place called Athlone. He first represented the Independent Irish Party. In 1859, he was re-elected, but this time as a member of the Liberal Party. He continued to serve as an MP until 1865.

After his time in Parliament, in 1866, John Ennis was given a special title: he became a baronet. This is a hereditary title, meaning it can be passed down in the family.

Family and Home

Sir John Ennis lived at a place called Ballinahown Court, near Athlone. He was married to Anna Maria Henry. They had one son, also named John, who later became an MP for Athlone, just like his father.

Sir John Ennis owned a lot of land. In the 1870s, he had about 8,774 acres (about 35.5 square kilometers) in Westmeath, 326 acres (about 1.3 square kilometers) in County Dublin, and 262 acres (about 1.06 square kilometers) in Roscommon. He passed away when he was 69 years old.
