His Career and Public Service
During the English Civil War, Sir John Fowell was a colonel in the Parliamentary army. He was also in charge of the town of Totnes as its governor.
In 1659, he was first elected as a Member of Parliament for Ashburton, Devon. He was re-elected for Ashburton in 1660 and again in 1661. He continued to serve as an MP until he passed away in 1677. He was 53 years old when he died.
In 1666, he became the Vice-Admiral of Devon. This was a significant role in the navy for his region. In 1674, when his father died, Sir John inherited the title of Baronet.

Sir John Fowell married Elizabeth Chichester (died 1678). She was the daughter of Sir John Chichester of Hall in Devon. Sir John and Elizabeth had several children, including:
- Sir John Fowell, 3rd Baronet (1665-1692): He was their oldest son and inherited the Baronet title. He also became an MP for Totnes. He died without any sons, and so the Baronet title ended with him.
- Edmond Fowell (1669-1670): Their second son, who sadly died when he was a baby.
- Elizabeth Fowell (died after 1680): She married George Parker in 1679. They did not have children together.
- Anne Fowell (1677-1678): She also died when she was a baby.
- Margaret Fowell: She married Arthur Champernowne of Dartington in 1679. They had a son named Arthur Champernowne, who also became an MP for Totnes.
