Sir John Garrard, 3rd Baronet (born 1638, died 1701) was an important English politician. He came from a noble family and followed in his father's footsteps. He held several important roles in government during his lifetime.

Early Life and Education

Sir John Garrard was the oldest son of Sir John Garrard, who was the 2nd Baronet. His mother was Jane Lambard. The Garrard family held a special title called a "baronetcy." This title is passed down through the family, usually from father to son.

He received a good education, which was common for people of his standing. In 1657, he studied at Christ Church, Oxford, which is a famous university. The next year, in 1658, he went to the Inner Temple. This was a place where people studied law to become lawyers or judges.

Becoming a Baronet

When his father passed away in 1686, John Garrard became the 3rd Baronet. He also inherited Lamer Park, a family estate located in Wheathampstead, Herefordshire. This meant he took on the family title and responsibilities.

Political Career

Sir John Garrard was very active in English politics. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) several times. An MP is someone elected by the people to represent them in the country's main law-making body, which is called Parliament.

Serving as an MP

He was first elected as an MP for Ludgershall in October 1679. A "constituency" is an area that an MP represents. Later, he was elected for Amersham in 1698. He also served a short time for Amersham again in early 1701.

High Sheriff Role

Besides being an MP, Sir John Garrard also served as the High Sheriff of Hertfordshire. This was for the years 1690 to 1691. A High Sheriff was a very old and important official. They were responsible for keeping law and order in their county. They also helped with elections and collecting taxes.

Family and Legacy

Sir John Garrard passed away in 1701. He was buried at St Helen's Church in Wheathampstead.

Marriage and Children

In 1669, he married Katherine. She was the daughter of Sir James Enyon and had been married before. Sir John and Katherine had one daughter named Jane. Jane later married Montagu Drake of Shardeloes.

However, Sir John Garrard did not have any sons. Because of this, the baronetcy did not pass to his own child. Instead, his younger brother, Sir Samuel Garrard, 4th Baronet, became the next Baronet.
