Early Life and Family
John Mordaunt was born into an important family. He was the second son of Sir Charles Mordaunt, who was the 3rd Baronet. His mother was Catherine Tollemache.
In 1665, when his older brother passed away, John became the 5th Baronet. This meant he inherited the title and some family land, including the Massingham Estate in Norfolk.
Local Responsibilities
Sir John Mordaunt also held important roles in his local area. He was one of two "deputy-lieutenants" for Warwickshire. This role involved helping to keep order and organize local affairs. For example, in 1683, he helped with searches for weapons in towns across Warwickshire.
Marriages and Children
Sir John Mordaunt married twice. His first wife was Anne Risley. They married in 1678 when he was 21 years old. Anne passed away in 1692.
Later, in 1695, he married his second wife, Penelope Warburton. Sir John and Penelope had two sons and two daughters who lived to adulthood.
Political Career
Sir John Mordaunt became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Warwickshire. An MP is someone elected to represent their area in the country's main law-making body, the House of Commons.
