John Rogers was born on June 14, 1676, in Plymouth, England. He was the only son of Sir John Rogers, 1st Baronet, and his mother, Mary Vincent. His father was a successful merchant in Plymouth. He had also served as a Member of Parliament for the town.

In 1698, John Rogers married Mary Henley in London. After their marriage, his father gave him a large estate called Blachford. This estate was located near Ivybridge. In 1710, John inherited his father's Baronet title, becoming the 2nd Baronet.

A Career in Politics

Sir John Rogers was very involved in the public life of Plymouth. He held several important positions. These roles allowed him to serve his community and the country.

Serving Plymouth as MP

In 1713, Sir John Rogers became the Recorder of Plymouth. This was a legal position. In the same year, he was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Plymouth. An MP represents their local area in the House of Commons. This is where laws are made for the country.

He was re-elected as an MP for Plymouth in 1715. He continued to serve in Parliament until 1722. After that, he chose not to run for election again.

Becoming Mayor of Plymouth

Besides being an MP, Sir John Rogers also served as the Mayor of Plymouth. He held this important local leadership role twice. His first term as Mayor was in 1722. He served again as Mayor in 1741.

Later Life and Legacy

Sir John Rogers passed away on January 21, 1744. He was 67 years old. He was buried in Cornwood, Devon, a week later.

He and his wife, Mary, had a large family. They had five sons and five daughters. After his death, his sons, Sir John Rogers, 3rd Baronet, and then Frederick, took over the Baronet title.
