Sir John Trelawny, 4th Baronet (born July 26, 1691 – died February 2, 1756) was an important politician from Cornwall, England. He lived at a place called Trelawne. Sir John was a member of the House of Commons, which is a part of the British Parliament, for many years, from 1713 to 1734.

Early Life and Family

Sir John Trelawny was the oldest son of Sir Jonathan Trelawny, 3rd Baronet. His mother was Rebecca Hele. Sir John's father was a very important church leader, serving as a Bishop in three different cities: Bristol, Exeter, and Winchester.

Sir John went to Christ Church, Oxford, a famous university, in 1708. Later, he married Agnes Blackwood from Scotland. When his father passed away on July 19, 1721, John became the 4th Baronet. A Baronet is a special title, like a knight, that can be passed down in a family.

A Life in Politics

The Trelawny family was very involved in politics in Cornwall. This meant they had a lot of influence in the area. Sir John started his political career in 1713. He became a Member of Parliament (MP) for a place called West Looe. This was a "family seat," meaning the Trelawny family often held this position.

  • In 1714, he got a special job working for the Prince of Wales (who later became King George II). This job was called "Groom of the Bedchamber."
  • In 1715, he became an MP for Liskeard without anyone running against him.
  • Around 1721, he became the "Recorder" of East Looe. This was a legal job, like a judge, and he kept it until 1734.
  • He continued to be an MP, representing West Looe again in 1722, and then East Looe in 1727.
  • Sir John decided not to run for Parliament in 1734.

Family Succession

Sir John Trelawny did not have any children of his own. His younger brother, Edward Trelawny, who was the Governor of Jamaica, also passed away before him. Because of this, when Sir John died in 1756, his cousin, Harry Trelawny, became the 5th Baronet.
