Sir John Trevelyan, 2nd Baronet (born April 9, 1670 – died September 25, 1755) was an important landowner from Nettlecombe, England. He was also a Tory politician. Sir John served in the English and British Parliament for many years, from 1695 to 1722.

Early Life and Family Background

Sir John Trevelyan was born into a well-known family. His father was Sir George Trevelyan, 1st Baronet, who lived at Nettlecombe Court. His mother was Margaret Willoughby. She was the daughter of John Willoughby.

Becoming a Baronet

When Sir John was just one year old, in 1671, his father passed away. This meant that young John inherited the title of Baronet. A Baronet is a special title, like a knight, but it can be passed down through the family.

His Education Journey

Sir John went to Wadham College, Oxford in 1687. This was a famous university where he would have studied many subjects. Getting a good education was very important for people in his position.

A Career in Politics

Sir John Trevelyan spent many years serving his country in Parliament. He was known as a Member of Parliament, or MP. This meant he helped make laws and decisions for England.

Representing Somerset

From 1695 to 1698, Sir John was an MP for Somerset. He also served for Somerset again in 1701. This was a big responsibility, representing the people of his home county.

High Sheriff of Somerset

In 1704, Sir John was given another important role. He became the High Sheriff of Somerset for one year. The High Sheriff was in charge of keeping law and order in the county.

Serving Minehead in Parliament

Later, Sir John became an MP for Minehead. He was elected in the 1708 general election and served until 1715. After a short break, he was elected again in 1717 and continued to serve until 1722.

Later Life and Legacy

Sir John Trevelyan lived a long life. He held his Baronet title for 84 years, which is a very long time!

His Family Life

Sir John was married two times. His first wife was Urith Pole. They had a daughter together, but sadly, she passed away before him. His second wife was Susanna Warren. With Susanna, he had three sons and five daughters.

Passing on the Title

Sir John Trevelyan passed away in September 1755, when he was 85 years old. His eldest son, George Trevelyan, became the 3rd Baronet, continuing the family's legacy.
