Sir Matthew Dudley had a busy career in politics. He held several key positions:
- In 1684, he became the High Sheriff of Northamptonshire. This was a very old and important job. The High Sheriff was in charge of keeping law and order in the county. They also helped with elections and other official duties.
- From 1703 to 1705, he served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Northampton. An MP is a person elected by the public to represent them in the country's parliament. They help make laws and discuss important issues.

Sadly, three of his sons died before him. His surviving son, Sir William Dudley, became the 3rd Baronet after his father's death. Sir William was the last person to hold this Baronet title in their family.
