A Career in Politics

Sir Matthew Dudley had a busy career in politics. He held several key positions:

  • In 1684, he became the High Sheriff of Northamptonshire. This was a very old and important job. The High Sheriff was in charge of keeping law and order in the county. They also helped with elections and other official duties.
  • From 1703 to 1705, he served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Northampton. An MP is a person elected by the public to represent them in the country's parliament. They help make laws and discuss important issues.
  • Later, from 1713 to 1715, he was an MP for Huntingdonshire. This shows he continued to be an active part of the government.

A Man of Science

Later Life and Legacy

Sir Matthew Dudley passed away on April 14, 1721. He had married a woman named Mary, who was the daughter of Henry O'Brien, the 7th Earl of Thomond. They had four sons and one daughter. Sadly, three of his sons died before him. His surviving son, Sir William Dudley, became the 3rd Baronet after his father's death. Sir William was the last person to hold this Baronet title in their family.
