Sir Robert Bateson was born on March 13, 1782. His parents were Thomas Bateson and Elizabeth Lloyd. He was their only son.
Becoming a Baronet
On December 18, 1818, Sir Robert Bateson received the title of Baronet. This is a special title, like a knight, but it can be passed down in the family. His title was linked to Belvoir Park in County Down, Ireland.
A Career in Politics
Sir Robert Bateson became a Member of Parliament (MP) in 1830. He worked in the British House of Commons, which is a big part of the UK government. He represented the area of Londonderry. He stayed in this role until 1842. After him, his oldest son, also named Robert, took over his seat in Parliament.
Sir Robert was also a magistrate in County Down. This meant he helped with local law and order. He was also a Deputy Lieutenant for the county.
In 1857, a special honor was given to him. He was chosen to lay the first stone for the Londonderry Monument. Today, this monument is better known as the Scrabo Tower.
Family Life
Sir Robert Bateson married Catherine Dickinson on April 27, 1811. They had six children together: two daughters and four sons.
His Legacy
Sir Robert Bateson passed away in 1863 at his home, Belvoir Park. He was 81 years old. His oldest son, Robert, had died many years before him. Because of this, his second son, Thomas, inherited the Baronet title. Thomas later became a Lord, known as Baron Deramore. Sir Robert's youngest son, George, also later inherited the Baronet title from his brother. One of Sir Robert's grandsons, Samuel, was a first-class cricketer.
