Sir Robert Fagge, 3rd Baronet facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Robert Fagge (or Fagg), 3rd Baronet (1673 – 22 June 1736), was an important English politician from Wiston, Sussex. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is like a part of today's Parliament, from 1708 to 1710. A Baronet is a special title, like a knight, that can be passed down in a family.

Early Life and Family Connections

Sir Robert Fagge was born in 1673 and was baptized on August 9th of that year. He was the only son of Sir Robert Fagge, 2nd Baronet, and his mother, Elizabeth Culpepper. His family lived in Lindfield, Sussex.

Sir Robert Fagge married Christian Bishopp around 1698. Her father was Sir Cecil Bishopp, 4th Baronet, from Parham, Sussex. This marriage connected two important families in the area.

Political Career and Challenges

Sir Robert Fagge came from a family that supported the Whig party. The Whigs were one of the main political groups in England at the time. He was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for Steyning in the 1708 general election. A general election is when people vote for who they want to represent them in Parliament.

However, Sir Robert didn't always vote with the Whigs. For example, he didn't support two important Whig ideas:

  • Allowing people from Palatine (a region in Germany) to become British citizens in 1709.
  • The impeachment (a formal accusation of wrongdoing) of Dr. Sacheverell in 1710.

Because he didn't fully support the Whig party, he lost his seat in the 1710 election.

Later Attempts in Politics

After his father passed away in 1715, Sir Robert Fagge became the 3rd Baronet. He tried to get back into Parliament several years later. This time, he ran as a member of the Tory party, which was the other main political group. He tried in both the 1722 and 1727 general elections for Steyning, but he was not successful. In 1727, he received only two votes.

Later Life and Legacy

Sir Robert Fagge passed away on June 22, 1736, when he was 62 years old. He died at Horley Heath, near Reigate. He was buried in Albourne on June 29th.

He had four sons and three daughters. Sadly, two of his sons and one of his daughters died before him. His son, also named Robert, became the 4th Baronet after him. Sir Robert's wife, Christian, lived until 1765.
