Sir Robert Jenkinson, 3rd Baronet facts for kids
Sir Robert Jenkinson, 3rd Baronet (born 1685 – died 1717) was an important British landowner and a politician from the Tory party. He represented Oxfordshire in the House of Commons, which is like the main law-making body in Britain, from 1710 until he passed away in 1717. He lived in Walcot, Oxfordshire, and Hawkesbury, Gloucestershire.
Early Life and Family
Robert Jenkinson was born on November 23, 1685. He was the oldest son of Sir Robert Jenkinson, 2nd Baronet and his wife, Sarah Tomlins.
He went to Trinity College, Oxford, a famous university, in 1703. Later, in 1705, he joined Lincoln's Inn, which is a place where people study to become lawyers.
When his father died on January 30, 1710, Robert inherited the title of Baronet. This meant he became the 3rd Baronet in his family. In 1712, he married Henrietta Maria Scarborough.
Political Career
Robert Jenkinson became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Oxfordshire in 1710. He took over this role from his father. This happened after a special election called a by-election on February 22, 1710.
As an MP, he was part of the Tory party. He voted against the impeachment (a formal accusation of wrongdoing) of a person named Dr. Sacheverell. On May 3, 1710, he presented a special message from his county to the Queen.
Jenkinson was very involved in supporting Dr. Sacheverell. He even hosted him for dinner at his home in Walcot in July 1710.
He was re-elected without anyone running against him in the 1710 British general election. People at the time called him a "worthy patriot" because he helped show problems with the previous government. He was also seen as a "Tory patriot" because he did not want the war to continue in 1711. He was also a member of a political group called the October Club.
He was elected again in 1713 and 1715. However, after 1713, he did not take a very active part in Parliament.
Later Life and Legacy
Sir Robert Jenkinson passed away from a fever on October 29, 1717. He was buried in Charlbury.
He did not have any children. Because of this, his title of Baronet went to his brother, Banks Jenkinson. His wife, Henrietta Maria, later married Charles Eversfield in 1731.
