Sir Robert Marsham, 4th Baronet (16 December 1650 – 25 July 1703) was an English politician. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) in the House of Commons from 1698 to 1702.

Who Was Sir Robert Marsham?

Sir Robert Marsham was born on December 16, 1650. He was the son of Sir John Marsham, 1st Baronet. His family lived at Bushey Hall in Hertfordshire.

Early Life and Education

In 1666, Robert Marsham went to St John's College, Oxford, which is a very old and famous university. A few years later, in 1669, he began studying law at a place called the Middle Temple. This was a common path for young men from important families who wanted to work in law or politics.

His Career in Law and Politics

Sir Robert Marsham had an important job as one of the six Clerks of Chancery. The Court of Chancery was a special court that dealt with fairness and justice, especially when regular laws didn't seem to cover a situation.

In 1696, he became the 4th Baronet after his nephew, John, passed away. From his nephew, he inherited a large estate called The Mote in Maidstone, Kent. Sir Robert then moved to live there.

In 1698, the people of Maidstone chose him to be their Member of Parliament. He served in this role, representing Maidstone in the House of Commons, until 1702.

Family Life

Sir Robert Marsham passed away in July 1703 when he was 52 years old. He was married to Margaret Bosvile. Her father was Thomas Bosvile from Little Motte, Eynsford, Kent.

Sir Robert and Margaret had a large family with three sons and four daughters. In 1693, five of their children were part of a special financial plan called a tontine. Their son, also named Robert, became the next Baronet after his father. Later, in 1716, this son was given a special noble title and became Baron Romney.
