Sir Tatton Sykes, 5th Baronet (born March 13, 1826 – died May 4, 1913) was an important English landowner. He was also known for breeding racehorses and helping to build many churches. People sometimes called him a bit "eccentric," meaning he had unusual habits or ideas.

Who Was Sir Tatton Sykes?

Sir Tatton Sykes was the older son of Sir Tatton Sykes, 4th Baronet and Mary Ann Foulis. When his father passed away in 1863, Tatton became the 5th Baronet. A "Baronet" is a special title, like a knight, that can be passed down in a family. His brother, Christopher Sykes, was a politician who served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Conservative Party.

Where Did Sir Tatton Live?

Sir Tatton lived at a place called Sledmere, which is a large estate near the city of York in England. He was also chosen to be the High Sheriff of Yorkshire for the years 1869 to 1870. The High Sheriff is a very old and important role, often involved in local law and order, though today it's mostly ceremonial.

On August 3, 1874, when Sir Tatton was 48 years old, he married Christina Anne Jessica Cavendish-Bentinck. Christina was the daughter of George Augustus Frederick Cavendish-Bentinck. She was 30 years younger than Sir Tatton. Their marriage was not very happy, and they eventually decided to live apart.

When Did Sir Tatton Sykes Pass Away?

Sir Tatton Sykes died in May 1913 when he was 87 years old. After his death, his son, Mark, took over the title of Baronet.
