Sir Thomas Carew, 1st Baronet (1632 – September 1673) was an important English politician. He came from Haccombe, Devon. Sir Thomas served in the House of Commons, which is a part of the English Parliament. He was a Member of Parliament from 1661 until he passed away in 1674.
Early Life and Family
Sir Thomas Carew was born in 1632 and was baptised on June 21st of that year. He was the oldest son of Thomas Carew, who also lived in Haccombe. His mother was Anna Clifford. She was the daughter of Reverend John Clifford from Ugbrooke.
Education and Political Journey
In 1649, Sir Thomas began studying law at the Middle Temple in London. This was a place where people trained to become lawyers. He then went to Exeter College, Oxford in 1650. He earned his first degree (a Bachelor of Arts) in 1653. Later, he received a Master of Arts degree in 1655.
When his father died in 1656, Sir Thomas inherited the family estate at Haccombe. This made him the head of the family.
In 1661, he was given the special title of a Baronet. This is a hereditary title, like a knight, but it can be passed down through the family. Also in 1661, he was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Tiverton. He served in a Parliament known as the Cavalier Parliament. Sir Thomas remained a Member of Parliament until his death in 1674.
Family Life
Sir Thomas Carew was married twice. His first marriage was to Elizabeth Carew around 1653. She was the daughter of Sir Henry Carew from Bickleigh Castle. Together, Sir Thomas and Elizabeth had six children.
Later, in 1672, he married Martha Duck. She was the widow of Nicholas Duck. Martha was also the daughter of Arthur Duck, who was a Member of Parliament for Minehead.
