Early Life and Family

Thomas D'Aeth was born in 1678. He was the only son of Thomas D'Aeth, who was a merchant (a person who traded goods) in London. His mother was Elhanna Rolt.

When he was younger, from about 1698 to 1700, Thomas D'Aeth traveled in Italy. He even spent some time studying at Padua University in 1699.

In 1701, he married Elizabeth Narborough. She was the daughter of Admiral Sir John Narborough, a famous naval officer. Elizabeth later inherited Knowlton Court, which became one of their homes.

Political Career

Sir Thomas D'Aeth was a member of the Whig party. This was one of the main political groups in Britain at the time.

Serving in Parliament

In 1708, Thomas D'Aeth was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for the area of Canterbury. As an MP, he worked in the House of Commons, helping to make decisions for the country.

He supported the government and voted on important issues. For example, in 1709, he voted to allow people called Palatines (who were refugees from Germany) to become British citizens. He also helped with a committee that worked on rules for public mourning.

In 1710, he lost his election and was not an MP for a short time.

Later Political Roles

Even when he wasn't an MP, Sir Thomas D'Aeth held other important roles. In 1709, he became a commissioner for Dover Harbour, which meant he helped manage the busy port. By 1712, he was also part of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, a group that worked to spread education and religious understanding.

In 1715, he was elected as an MP again, this time for the area of Sandwich.

Becoming a Baronet

A special honor came to him on July 16, 1716, when he was made a Baronet of Knowlton. This title is passed down through families and is a sign of high social standing.

After his first wife, Elizabeth, passed away in 1721, Sir Thomas D'Aeth decided not to run for election in 1722. He later married his second wife, Jane.

Later Life

Sir Thomas D'Aeth passed away on January 4, 1745. He had a large family. With his first wife, Elizabeth, he had two sons and five daughters. He also had one son with his second wife, Jane.
