Who Was Sir Thomas Fetherston?

Sir Thomas Fetherston was the son of Sir Ralph Fetherston, 1st Baronet. When his father passed away in 1780, Thomas inherited the title and became the 2nd Baronet. This meant he took on his father's special rank and responsibilities.

Serving in Parliament

Sir Thomas Fetherston spent many years working as a politician. He was a Member of Parliament (often called an MP). An MP is a person chosen by voters to represent them and make laws in a country's government.

In the Irish Parliament

From 1783 to 1790, Sir Thomas was an MP in the Irish House of Commons. This was the main law-making body for Ireland at that time. He represented an area called St Johnstown. Later, from 1796 to 1800, he represented County Longford in the same Irish Parliament.

In the UK Parliament

After 1800, Ireland joined with Great Britain to form the United Kingdom. Because of this, the Irish Parliament became part of the larger House of Commons of the United Kingdom. Sir Thomas continued his political work there. From 1801 until his death in 1819, he represented the area of Longford in the UK Parliament.
