Sir Thomas Jackson, a very important banker.

Sir Thomas Jackson (born in 1841, died in 1915) was a very important banker. He was the third leader of a big bank called The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation. This bank helped to build and grow Hong Kong when it was a British colony.

Early Life and Career

Sir Thomas Jackson was born on June 4, 1841. He grew up in Ireland. In 1860, he started working at the Bank of Ireland in Belfast.

In 1864, Jackson moved to Hong Kong. He joined another bank there first. The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, often called HSBC, was just starting. Its main building was being built in 1864.

Jackson joined HSBC in 1865, one year after it opened. He worked as an accountant in Shanghai. Later, from 1870 to 1874, he became a manager in Yokohama, Japan.

Leading the Bank

In 1876, when he was only 35 years old, Jackson became the chief manager of HSBC. This was the most important job in the bank. He held this position for a long time, until 1902.

During his time as chief manager, he sometimes went back to the United Kingdom. He managed the bank's office in London for a few years.

Under Jackson's leadership, HSBC became the most important bank in Asia. People even called him the bank's "Great Architect." He was known for being smart and careful. He also had the nickname "Lucky Jackson." This was because he often knew exactly when to act quickly and bravely.

In 1902, he was given a special honor. He became a Baronet. This meant he could use the title "Sir" before his name. It was a way to recognize his great work.

Lasting Impact

Sir Thomas Jackson did a lot for HSBC and for Hong Kong. To honor him, a statue of him was put up in 1906. It stands in Statue Square in front of the bank's building in Hong Kong. The statue is still there today.

Jackson is also remembered in his home country, Ireland. There is a special stained glass window in a church in Creggan that honors him.
