Lieutenant-General Sir Thomas McMahon, 2nd Baronet (1779–1860) was an important officer in the British Army. He had a long and successful career, serving in different parts of the world.

Sir Thomas McMahon: A Military Leader

Sir Thomas McMahon was born in 1779 and lived until 1860. He became a high-ranking officer, known as a Lieutenant-General, in the British Army. His career involved leading soldiers and managing military operations.

His Family and Early Life

Thomas McMahon was the youngest son of John MacMahon. His mother was Mary Stackpoole. He had a full brother named William MacMahon. William later became a very important judge in Ireland.

Thomas also had an older half-brother, Sir John McMahon. Sir John was a private secretary to the Prince Regent (who later became King George IV). This connection was very helpful for Thomas and William. Even though they came from a modest background, their half-brother's influence helped them rise in their careers.

When Sir John McMahon passed away in 1817, the title of Baronet (a special noble title) was passed to Thomas.

Thomas McMahon married Emily Westropp. They had nine children together. One of their sons, Thomas Westropp McMahon, also became a General and inherited the Baronet title.

Military Service and Commands

Sir Thomas McMahon had an active military career. He first served with the Portuguese army during the Peninsular War. This was a big conflict in Europe.

Later, he moved to India, where he became an adjutant-general. This role meant he helped manage the army's daily operations.

In 1834, he returned to England. He was made the Lieutenant-Governor of Portsmouth. He also became the General Officer Commanding the South-West District. These were important leadership roles in the British military.

On February 14, 1840, Sir Thomas McMahon took on a very significant role. He became the Commander-in-chief of the Bombay Army in India. This meant he was in charge of all the British forces in that region. He held this position until he retired on April 8, 1847.
