Sir Tristram Beresford (died January 15, 1673) was an important soldier and politician. He was from a family with both English and Irish roots. Many famous people, like the Marquesses of Waterford, came from his family line. He was the first person in his family to hold the special title of Baronet.

Early Life

Tristram Beresford was the oldest son of Tristram Beresford. His father came from Kent, England, and moved to Ireland. His mother's name was Susannah Brooke.

His Career in Politics

Sir Tristram Beresford became a manager for a large area of land in Londonderry. This land was owned by a big company from London.

In 1634, he joined the Irish House of Commons. This was a group of people who helped make laws for Ireland. He represented the area of County Londonderry.

Later, from 1656 to 1658, he represented three counties: Londonderry, Donegal, and Tyrone. He did this in a different parliament called the Second Protectorate Parliament, which met in Westminster, England.

After the king returned to power in 1660, Sir Tristram was elected again. He represented Londonderry in the Irish Parliament starting in 1661. He held this important job for five years.

In 1664, he received the title of Knight. The next year, on May 5, 1665, he was given an even higher title. He became a Baronet, which is a special honor passed down through families. His title was "Baronet, of Coleraine in the County of Londonderry."

Family Life

Sir Tristram Beresford was married two times. His first wife was Anne Rowley. She was the oldest daughter of John Rowley, who was the first Mayor of Derry. Anne and Sir Tristram had one son and two daughters together.

After Anne passed away, Sir Tristram married Sarah Sackville. They had three more sons and three more daughters.

Sir Tristram Beresford died on January 18, 1673. He was buried in Coleraine five days later. His oldest son, Randal, took over his title and became the 2nd Baronet.
