Sir William Acton was born in 1570. His father, Richard Acton, was also a merchant in London. A merchant is someone who buys and sells goods for profit. William learned his trade by becoming an apprentice with the Merchant Taylor Company in 1593. He finished his training and became a full member in 1601.

Acton's Rise in London Politics

In 1628, Sir William Acton was elected as an alderman for the City of London. An alderman was a senior member of the city's government. In the same year, he also served as the Sheriff of London. The Sheriff was a key official responsible for law and order and managing elections.

Becoming a Baronet

Because of his importance and service, Sir William Acton was given a special title. On May 30, 1629, he was made a baronet. This was a hereditary title, meaning it could be passed down in his family.

The Lord Mayor Election of 1640

In 1640, Sir William Acton was expected to become the Lord Mayor of London. This was a very high honor. However, something unusual happened. He was not chosen for the role. This was because of his strong Royalist views. A Royalist was someone who strongly supported the King during a time of political tension in England. Instead, another person, Edmund Wright, was chosen as a compromise candidate.

Sir William Acton was married twice. His first wife was Anne Bill. Later, he married Jane Johnson Bird. She was the widow of Sir William Bird. Sir William Acton had one daughter named Elizabeth. She was his only heir, meaning she inherited all his wealth. When Elizabeth married Sir Thomas Whitmore, her wealth greatly benefited the Whitmore family. Sir William Acton passed away on January 22, 1651. Since he had no sons, his baronetcy title ended when he died.
