Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir William Ayloffe, 3rd Baronet (born December 3, 1618 – died 1675) was an important officer. He served in the Royalist army. This army fought during the English Civil War.

A Royalist Officer's Story

William was the oldest son of Sir Benjamin Ayloffe, 2nd Baronet. His mother was Margaret. She was the fifth daughter of Thomas Fanshawe (remembrancer of the exchequer). William was born on December 3, 1618.

Just like his father, William supported the King. This was during the English Civil War. He was a colonel, which is a high-ranking officer. He led a group of soldiers at the siege of Colchester. A siege is when an army surrounds a city. They try to take control of it.

When his father died in 1662, William became the new head of the family. He inherited their lands and the title of Baronet. A Baronet is a special title. It is passed down through families. It is like a knight, but it can be inherited.

Sir William died in 1675. He was buried in a place called Braxted. He did not have any children who lived. So, his younger brother, Sir Benjamin Ayloffe, 4th Baronet, inherited the Baronet title instead.

Sir William's Family

Sir William married a woman named Anne. She was the first daughter of Peter Orby. Peter Orby was from Burton Pedwardine and Chertsey. Anne was also the widow of Frederick de la Tremouille. He was a Count from France.

Anne died on February 7, 1684. She was buried in Braxted, just like Sir William. Sir William and Anne had two sons together. Sadly, neither of their sons lived longer than their father. Their first son, Benjamin, died when he was a baby. Their second son, William, was born in 1646 and died in 1664 at the age of eighteen.
