The Skewb Ultimate is a fun and challenging puzzle. It has twelve sides, just like a dodecahedron. This puzzle was first called the Pyraminx Ball. A famous puzzle designer named Uwe Meffert created it. Most Skewb Ultimate puzzles have six different colors. Opposite sides usually share the same color. Some older versions, however, had twelve unique colors.
What is the Skewb Ultimate?
The Skewb Ultimate looks like a Megaminx puzzle. Both are shaped like a dodecahedron. But the Skewb Ultimate is cut in a different way. Each of its twelve faces is cut into four parts. Two of these parts are the same size. The other two are different sizes. Each cut goes deep into the puzzle. This creates eight small corner pieces. It also makes six larger "edge" pieces.
The main goal of the puzzle is simple. You mix up all the colors. Then, you try to put them back. You want each side to be a single, solid color again.
How to Solve the Skewb Ultimate
When you first look at the Skewb Ultimate, it might seem very hard. Its cuts are uneven. This makes the pieces move in unusual ways. It can look tricky to figure out.
But here's a secret: the Skewb Ultimate is similar to other puzzles. It works like the Skewb Diamond. If you know how to solve a Skewb Diamond, you can solve this one! You just need to think of the Diamond's face pieces as the Ultimate's corner pieces. And the Diamond's corner pieces are like the Ultimate's edge pieces. The only extra step is to make sure the Ultimate's corner pieces are facing the right way. You might need a special move to turn them correctly.
The Skewb Ultimate is also very much like the original Skewb puzzle. If you can solve a Skewb, you're almost there! You match the corners of the Skewb to the corners of the Ultimate. The Skewb's center pieces are like the Ultimate's edge pieces. The only new challenge is orienting the edge pieces. They might need an extra turn to face the correct direction after you place them.
