Sleepover facts for kids

A sleepover is a fun event where a young person, like you, spends the night at a friend's house. It's also called a slumber party or pajama party. Often, several friends get together for a sleepover. While usually for kids and teenagers, sometimes adults have them too!
What Happens at a Sleepover?
A sleepover usually means kids or teenagers spend the night at a friend's house. Grown-ups are typically home, even if they aren't directly supervising. Fun activities often include playing games, watching movies, eating snacks, and having long chats late into the night. These activities help friends get closer.
Sleepovers are seen as an important step as you grow up. They help young people become more independent. They also make friendships stronger and help you learn social skills. In the United States, sleepovers are very common. They often happen for birthdays or during school holidays.
Sleepovers Around the World
Sleepovers are popular in many places, but they can be a bit different.
- In the United Kingdom, they are also called "sleepovers" or "stayovers." Kids there enjoy watching films or playing video games.
- In Japan, sleepovers are called otomarikai (おとまりかい). They are less common because families value privacy. Also, homes in cities can be smaller. But close friends do have them, often linked to school events.
- In Australia, sleepovers are much like those in the U.S. They sometimes include outdoor fun, like camping in a backyard.
- In some parts of South Asia or the Middle East, overnight gatherings might be less common. This is because family time is often preferred, or boys and girls might socialize separately. However, young people in cities are starting to have more Western-style sleepovers.
Teen Sleepovers
Since the 1990s, people have talked about teenagers having sleepovers. Sometimes, both boys and girls would stay overnight together. Some people worried about this trend. Others thought it was a safer way for teens to socialize. They believed it was better than meeting up outside the house without any adult nearby.
