Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Slocum is a small place in Ohio, a state in the United States. It's called an "unincorporated community" because it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's part of Scioto County.

The Story of Slocum

Slocum has an interesting past, and its name has changed a few times. Over the years, it was also known as Slocums, Slocums Station, Wait, and Watt.

Early Settlers and Post Offices

The area was first settled by people, and some of the earliest families there were named Slocum. That's how the place got its original name, Slocums Station.

A post office is a place where you can send and receive mail. Slocums Station had its own post office starting in 1866. However, it closed just a few years later in 1869.

The post office reopened in 1875, but this time it was called Waits. Later, in 1894, its name was shortened to just Wait. Finally, the post office in Slocum closed for good in 1906.
