Slush Puppie facts for kids
Slush Puppie is a popular frozen drink that looks like a mix of ice and liquid. It was first made in 1970. You can buy Slush Puppie drinks from the company that makes them, J & J Snack Foods, or from other stores that sell their products across the United States.
A Slush Puppie drink has two main parts: the base and the flavor. The base is made from a special sweet syrup. This syrup is mixed with water and then frozen. This process creates tiny pieces of ice floating in a sweet liquid. The drink tastes like the flavor of the syrup that is added.
The fun mascot for the Slush Puppie brand is a white puppy named Chilly Dog. He wears a blue shirt with the letter "S" on it and a cozy knit hat.
How Slush Puppie Started
The idea for Slush Puppie came from Will Radcliff, his sister Phyllis, and their mother Thelma. They thought of the name "Slush Puppie" while relaxing on their front porch in Cincinnati, Ohio. The name was inspired by "hush puppy," another type of food.
The business began in their home in Cincinnati. Over time, it grew bigger and bigger. It moved from a small warehouse to a factory, and then to a larger building. Eventually, it became a well-known company.
Growth and New Owners
Under Will Radcliff's leadership, Slush Puppie grew a lot. It reached sales of $25 million each year. In 2000, Radcliff sold the company to Cadbury Schweppes for $16.6 million.
Later, on May 30, 2006, J & J Snack Foods bought Slush Puppie. This company also owns ICEE, another popular frozen drink brand. J & J Snack Foods is a food manufacturer based in New Jersey.
