Smell is one of our five main senses, helping us understand the world around us. It's how we figure out what things smell like, whether it's delicious food, a fresh flower, or something stinky! Our sense of smell helps us enjoy life and even keeps us safe.

What is Olfaction?

Olfaction is the scientific word for our sense of smell. It's the amazing ability our bodies have to detect tiny chemical particles floating in the air. When these particles enter our nose, they send signals to our brain, telling us what we are smelling.

The Nose's Job

Inside your nose, there are special cells called olfactory receptors. Think of them like tiny antennas. When you breathe in, air carrying odor molecules goes into your nose. These molecules stick to the receptors. Each type of receptor is designed to recognize certain shapes of molecules.

Sending Signals to the Brain

Once the odor molecules connect with the receptors, they create an electrical signal. This signal travels along nerves directly to your brain. Your brain then quickly figures out what the smell is. It can tell the difference between thousands of different smells!

What is an Odor?

An odor is the actual smell itself. It's the sensation we get when our nose detects certain chemical compounds. These compounds are often very tiny and float easily in the air. When enough of these compounds reach our nose, we perceive an odor.

Where Do Odors Come From?

Animal Smells
