Island History
Smith's Island is very important in Bermuda's history. It was the site of the very first settlement there. In 1610, three men named Carter, Chard, and Waters built cabins on the island. They were survivors from a shipwreck in 1609 of a ship called the Sea Venture. Most other survivors sailed to Jamestown, Virginia, but these three stayed behind. This happened two years before the first planned group of colonists arrived in Bermuda on July 11, 1612.
