Smoky Night is a children's book written by Eve Bunting in 1994. It tells the story of a young boy named Daniel during a difficult time in Los Angeles. Fires and commotion make neighbors, who didn't get along before, work together. They need to find their lost cats. In the end, the cats show their owners how to become friends. This book was named one of "One Hundred Books that Shaped the Century" by the School Library Journal. It helped create a new type of serious picture book. The amazing pictures by David Diaz won the book the 1995 Caldecott Medal.
What Happens in the Story?
The story takes place in Los Angeles, where Daniel and his mom live. There is a lot of commotion and fires happening around their city. Their apartment building catches fire, so Daniel and his mother must leave.
They have to go to a safe place. Before this, Daniel's family and their neighbors did not get along well. But now, they must help each other. During the chaos, Daniel's cat and a neighbor's cat get lost.
When they arrive at the shelter, a kind firefighter brings the two lost cats. The cats have become friends while they were lost. This helps their owners learn to get along too.
