Smythe baronets facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A baronet is a special title in the United Kingdom. It is like being a knight, but the title can be passed down through the family. The Smythe family had one of these titles created for them. It was called the Smythe Baronetcy of Eshe Hall. This happened in England on February 23, 1661, for Edward Smythe.

The Smythe family were Roman Catholics. They came from William Smythe of Nunstainton in Durham. He married Margaret Eshe, who owned Eshe Hall. The family was known for being involved in the Rising of the North in 1569.

During the English Civil War, the Smythes were very loyal to the King. They supported the Royalists, who were called Cavaliers. Because of this, their lands were taken away in 1644. This happened when England was ruled by Parliament, without a king.

When King Charles II returned to the throne, it was called the English Restoration. Edward Smythe was given the baronet title. This was a reward for his family's strong loyalty to the King.

The Smythe Baronets

The first baronet, Sir Edward Smythe, married Mary Lee. She was the owner of Acton Burnell Castle in Shropshire. This castle then became the main home for the Smythe family.

Later, the sixth baronet, Sir Edward Joseph Smythe, held an important local job. He was the High Sheriff of Shropshire in 1831. The seventh baronet, Sir Charles Frederick Joseph Smythe, was also High Sheriff in 1867.
