SnackWell's was a popular American food brand. It first appeared in 1992. They were known for their fat-free cookies. These cookies came in many flavors like creme, shortbread, and devil's food cake. Originally, SnackWell's was part of Nabisco. Later, it was sold to Back to Nature Foods.
The Story of SnackWell's
SnackWell's Under Nabisco
When SnackWell's first came out, people thought fat-free foods were healthier. This was because of health advice in the early 1990s. This advice suggested eating less fat. SnackWell's cookies were marketed as a healthier snack choice.
However, something unexpected happened. People sometimes ate more SnackWell's cookies because they thought they were healthy. This idea is sometimes called the "Snackwell Effect." It means that if you think something is good for you, you might eat more of it. Even if a cookie has no fat, eating too many can still mean you get too many calories.
A food scientist named Sam Porcello helped create SnackWell's. He worked for Nabisco.
SnackWell's and Back to Nature
Today, SnackWell's products are made by Back to Nature Foods. This company is located in Naples, Florida. In Canada, you can find SnackWell's potato chips and crackers.
In 2017, another company, B&G Foods, bought SnackWell's cookies. They also bought Back to Nature granola. As of 2019, SnackWell's Devil's Food Cookie Cakes are no longer "fat-free." They now have a small amount of fat. The company says they have an improved recipe.
