Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sofiya Ostrovska is a Ukrainian mathematician born in 1958. She is very interested in how likely events are to happen (called probability theory) and how to find simpler ways to describe complex things (called approximation theory). She is well-known for her work on special mathematical tools called q-Bernstein polynomials. These are like a modern version of older tools called Bernstein polynomials.

Sofiya Ostrovska has also written about computer science, especially about how to build good computer programs (this is called software engineering). Today, she is a professor of mathematics at Atılım University in Turkey.

Early Life and Learning

Sofiya Ostrovska was born on September 26, 1958, in a city called Sloviansk. At that time, Sloviansk was part of the Soviet Union.

Both of her parents, Larisa Semenovna Kudina and Iossif Ostrovskii, were mathematicians. Her younger brother, Mikhail Ostrovskii, also became a mathematics professor at St. John's University (New York City). It seems math runs in the family!

Sofiya studied mathematics at Kharkov State University. This university is now known as the National University of Kharkiv. She earned her first degree there in 1977 and a master's degree in 1980. Later, in 1989, she completed her highest degree, a Ph.D., at Kyiv State University. This university is now called the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.

Sofiya Ostrovska started her teaching career in Ukraine. From 1984 to 1993, she was an assistant professor at the Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute. Then, from 1993 to 1995, she taught as an associate professor at Kharkov State University.

In 1995, she moved to the H.S. Skovoroda Kharkiv National Pedagogical University. A year later, in 1996, she moved to Turkey. There, she first worked as an associate professor at Dokuz Eylül University in İzmir.

She became a full professor in 2000 at the İzmir Institute of Technology. Since 2001, she has been a professor at Atılım University, where she continues to teach and do research today.
