Sofya Yanovskaya, an important mathematician and historian.

Sofya Aleksandrovna Yanovskaya (born January 31, 1896 – died October 24, 1966) was a Soviet mathematician and historian. She studied the history of mathematics, how we use logic in math, and the ideas behind mathematics. Sofya Yanovskaya is famous for helping to bring back the study of mathematical logic in the Soviet Union. She also helped publish and edit the math writings of a well-known thinker named Karl Marx.

Life Story

Sofya Yanovskaya was born in Pruzhany, a town near Brest, in 1896. Her father, Alexander Neimark, was an accountant. From 1915 to 1918, she went to a women's college in Odessa. During this time, she became interested in communism.

After college, she worked for the government until 1924. Then, she started teaching at the Institute of Red Professoriate. This was a special school for training future leaders. She taught at Moscow State University for most of her career. She only stopped teaching during the war years, from 1941 to 1945.

Discovering Karl Marx's Math

A famous writer named Engels had mentioned that Karl Marx wrote about mathematics. Sofya Yanovskaya found these writings, which were called Mathematical Manuscripts. She helped to publish them for the first time in Russian in 1933.

She earned her special doctoral degree in 1935. Her work on Karl Marx's math papers started in the 1930s. Her efforts might have even influenced the study of a math topic called non-standard analysis in China.

Sofya Yanovskaya is also remembered for her work on the history and ideas of mathematics. She had a big influence on many young researchers. In 1935, she even convinced the famous philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein not to move to the Soviet Union when he visited. In 1968, Sofya Yanovskaya helped to arrange an even better publication of Marx's math work.

She passed away in Moscow in 1966 from diabetes.

Awards and Recognition

For all her important work, Sofya Yanovskaya received the Order of Lenin. This was a very high award in the Soviet Union. She also received other medals for her contributions.
