The Soho Cottage is a special old house located at 21 Windsor Street in Worcester, Massachusetts. It was built way back in 1860! This house is a great example of a building style called Carpenter Gothic. For many years, a very important local business owner lived here. The Soho Cottage was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. This means it's an important historical building worth protecting.

What Makes Soho Cottage Special?

The Soho Cottage is found in the Bell Hill neighborhood of Worcester. It sits on the corner of Windsor Street and Forestdale Road. This house is made of wood and has 1-1/2 stories.

Unique Design Features

The roof of the cottage is very steep and pointed. It has special decorations called "bargeboard" on the edges. These look like fancy carvings. The outside walls are covered with vertical wooden boards.

You'll also notice a part of the roof that sticks out to the side. There's a window that pops out from the wall, called an "oriel window." The windows in some of the pointed roof sections have cool shapes. Some are half-round, and others have a pointed "Gothic" style arch at the top.

A Look Back at History

The Soho Cottage was built in 1860. It was designed to look like a mirror image of another house. That house, called the Forest Hill Cottage, is right across Windsor Street. However, the Forest Hill Cottage has changed a lot over time.

Who Lived Here?

The first person to own the Soho Cottage was William Allen. He came from England and worked as a machinist. A machinist is someone who builds and fixes machines. William Allen also became a foreman, which means he managed other workers in local factories.

In 1875, William Allen bought a company called Worcester Boiler Works. This company made big boilers for industries. It grew to be one of the largest boiler makers in all of New England! William Allen lived in the Soho Cottage until he passed away in 1906.
