Dominique McLean (born March 2, 1998), known as SonicFox, is an American professional esports player. They are famous for playing many different fighting games. SonicFox has won many big tournaments, including seven Evolution Championship Series (EVO) events. They have won these events in five different game series. As of August 2019, SonicFox was the highest-paid fighting game player in the world. They had earned over $719,000. SonicFox was named Esports Player of the Year at The Game Awards 2018. They were also on Forbes magazine's "30 Under 30" list for Games in 2020.
SonicFox is part of the furry fandom. They often compete in a fursuit that looks like a blue-and-white fox. This fox is their special character, called a fursona.
SonicFox's Gaming Journey
SonicFox's older brother, Christian, first got them interested in fighting video games. This happened when SonicFox was only three years old. As they grew up, SonicFox kept playing games. Around age ten or eleven, they discovered the furry fandom. This is when they created their "SonicFox" character. SonicFox is well-known for wearing a fursuit of their blue-and-white fox fursona when they play in tournaments.
Around 2011, SonicFox was playing Mortal Kombat online for fun. Their online friends told them to try a real tournament. So, in 2012, SonicFox went to an offline Mortal Kombat event. They placed ninth, but they loved the exciting feeling of competing. Since then, SonicFox has kept playing in many fighting game championships.
At Evo 2014, SonicFox won the Injustice: Gods Among Us tournament. They had an amazing 6-0 victory. In December 2015, News.com.au reported that SonicFox had not lost a single tournament in 18 months. They also earned $150,000 in just two weeks by winning Mortal Kombat tournaments.
SonicFox was honored as the "Esports Player of the Year" at The Game Awards 2018. Their acceptance speech got a lot of attention. In 2020, Forbes magazine put SonicFox on their "30 Under 30" list. This list highlights young people who are successful in the Games category.
In early 2020, SonicFox joined the fighting games part of the esports team Evil Geniuses. Later that year, SonicFox was added as a background character in the game Skullgirls. They announced that they left Evil Geniuses in late 2023.

Dominique McLean grew up in Townsend, Delaware. In 2018, SonicFox was a student at the New York Institute of Technology. They worked hard to balance their schoolwork with their professional gaming career. SonicFox publicly uses they/them pronouns.
