Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sonic & Knuckles is an exciting video game that came out in 1994. It's the fourth game in the popular Sonic the Hedgehog series. Sonic Team created the game, and Sega published it for the Sega Mega Drive. In this game, you can play as two cool characters: Sonic the Hedgehog or Knuckles the Echidna. A special feature called Lock-on Technology lets you connect Sonic the Hedgehog 2 or Sonic the Hedgehog 3 cartridges. This unlocks new ways to play those games!

How to Play Sonic & Knuckles

Playing Sonic & Knuckles is a lot like playing Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Your main goals are to collect shiny Rings, defeat enemy robots, and reach the end of each game area.

Exploring the Zones

The game has eight different areas, called Zones. Each Zone offers unique challenges. Most Zones have two levels, which are known as "acts." Only the fastest character, Super Sonic, can reach the very last Zone. Also, only Sonic or his friend Tails can play in the second-to-last Zone, called the Death Egg.

At the end of every Act 1, you will face off against one of Dr. Eggman's robots. Then, at the end of every Act 2, you'll have a big battle with Dr. Eggman himself!

Dealing with Badniks

Throughout the acts, you'll find small enemy robots called "Badniks." Most of these can be destroyed by jumping on them. When you destroy a Badnik, a small animal that was trapped inside will jump out and be free!

Collecting Rings

Golden Rings float in the air all over the game. Collecting 100 or 200 Rings will earn you an extra life. If you get hit by an enemy, a spike, or Dr. Eggman, and you have no Rings, you will lose a life. But if you have Rings, they will scatter, and you can try to pick some up before you lose them all!

Starposts and Bonus Stages

You'll also see special "Starposts" in the acts. If you touch a Starpost, it will spin. If you lose a life after touching one, you will restart your game from that Starpost.

Starposts can also lead you to a Bonus Stage! If you have 20 or more Rings when you touch a Starpost, a ring of stars will appear above it. Jump into this star ring, and you'll be transported to a fun Bonus Stage where you can earn extra items.
