What is the Sons and Daughters of Pioneer Rivermen?

This group was started in 1939. Its main goal is to keep alive the memories of the brave "pioneer rivermen" and to protect river history. Think of it as a club dedicated to old boats and river stories! As of 2025, Jeff Spear is the president of S&D. The organization is guided by twelve governors. These governors serve for three years and are chosen by the members.

How S&D Helps Preserve River History

S&D has done many important things to save river history.

  • In 1941, they helped create the Ohio River Museum in Marietta. This museum teaches people all about the Ohio River and its past.
  • Later, in 1955, S&D worked with the Ohio Historical Society. They helped bring a real steam towboat, the W. P. Snyder Jr., to the museum.
  • In 1972, a new building for the museum was built. S&D helped with this project too.
  • S&D also worked with the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. Together, they created the Inland Rivers Library. This special library is part of the library's rare books collection. It holds many important documents about rivers.

Sharing Stories: The S&D Reflector Magazine

S&D publishes a magazine four times a year. It is called the S&D Reflector. This magazine shares stories and information about river history. The magazine was first created and edited by Captain Frederick Way, Jr.. He was one of the people who helped start S&D.
