What is the S&D?
The Sons and Daughters of Pioneer Rivermen is a historical organization. This means they focus on learning about and preserving the past. Their main goal is to celebrate the lives of "pioneer rivermen." These were the brave people who worked on rivers long ago. They also work to save important parts of river history for everyone to learn from.
Who Leads the S&D?
The S&D organization is led by a president. Currently, Jeff Spear is the president. A group of twelve "governors" also helps run the organization. Each governor serves for three years. They are chosen by the members of the S&D through a vote.
Helping Museums and Libraries
The S&D has done a lot to help share river history with the public.
Ohio River Museum
In 1941, the S&D helped create the Ohio River Museum in Marietta. This museum is a great place to learn about the history of rivers. The S&D worked with the Ohio Historical Society to make the museum even better. In 1955, they helped bring the steam towboat W. P. Snyder Jr. to the museum. This boat is a real piece of history! Later, in 1972, they helped build a new building for the museum.
Inland Rivers Library
The S&D also worked with the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. Together, they started the Inland Rivers Library. This library is part of the library's special collection of rare books. It holds many important documents and books about river history.
The S&D Reflector Magazine
The S&D publishes its own magazine called the S&D Reflector. This magazine comes out four times a year. It shares stories and information about river history. The S&D Reflector was first created and edited by Captain Frederick Way, Jr.. He was one of the people who helped start the S&D organization.
