Sophie of Bar: A Medieval Countess
Sophie was the daughter of Frederick II, who was a duke in a place called Upper Lorraine. Her mother was Matilda of Swabia. When Sophie's father died around 1026, she and her sister, Beatrice, went to live with their aunt, Empress Gisela. Beatrice later married a powerful man named Boniface, who was a margrave in Tuscany. After he died, she married Godfrey III.
Sophie became the Countess of Bar in 1033. This happened because her brother, Duke Frederick III, died without any children. So, Sophie took on the important role of ruling the county. She was Countess until 1092.
She married Louis, Count of Montbéliard, who lived from 1019 to about 1073. Their son, Thierry II, later became the Count of Bar-Montbéliard.
